Ascot - Saturday 25th July

What a day we have in store at Ascot. The King George is looking like one of the best renewals this century with contenders from all over the globe vying for the big money prize. The undercard is strong and the weather is glorious so where else would you rather be?

13:45, Princess Margaret Japan Cup Stakes

Dark Issue 4/1, 2pts each-way (3 places)

Richard Hannon's 2 year old fully Dark Issue must have a strong chance here. A decisive winner on debut at Goodwood in May she built on that to finish strongly in the Albany. Her 4th place finish that day is as good a piece of form as any in this race and she's open to more improvement back at the same track today.

15:35, King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Calandagan 13/8, 4pts win

A quality race. Benvenuto Cellini is an Irish Derby winner who will have his ground here as he searches to end Ballydoyle's decade long drought in this but the suspicion is that he's probably not quite good enough for this year's race. Minnie Hauk will have her followers as a strong second string from the stable but she's becoming frustrating and is maybe better on an easier surface while both Kalpana and Goliath have claims on their best form but both must show a career best to come out on top today. There wasn't much between Masquerade Ball and Calandagan in the Japan Cup but the French gelding is back on a track he is exceptional at and it's hard to look past the global superstar.
